A vibrant celebration of artistic mastery and cultural pride, “Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting”: Esther Mahlangu. A Retrospective, embarks on a global journey, beginning in Cape Town. The Iziko Museums of South Africa and BMW join forces to showcase over 50 years of Mahlangu’s transformative artistry, culminating in a comprehensive exhibition from February 18, 2024, to August 11, 2024.
Mahlangu’s meteoric rise from humble beginnings paints a compelling narrative. Starting with traditional Ndebele wall paintings, she transcended boundaries, becoming a globally acclaimed contemporary artist. The retrospective, curated by Nontobeko Ntombela, unveils more than 100 artworks, historical photographs, and a short film, offering an intimate look into her vibrant career.
A centerpiece of the exhibition is the return of Mahlangu’s iconic BMW 525i Art Car to South Africa after 30 years. This landmark collaboration in 1991, the first by an African and woman, exemplifies her ability to blend African heritage with modern design.
Dr. Bongani Ndhlovu, Acting CEO of Iziko Museums, says: “This colossal showcase honors Dr. Mahlangu’s triumph against adversity and reaffirms calls for Africa-centered innovations.”
Peter van Binsbergen, CEO of BMW Group South Africa, adds: “We celebrate Mam’ Esther’s legacy and cherish this collaboration that transcends boundaries.”
